Jan 2010
Music Royalty
2010 started of with Music Royalty visiting The Workshop. Emmylou Harris recorded in my studio, with Phil Madeira producing. It was a real treat, as she has always been a favorite. Her voice is amazing. Vibe City!!! It was the first time I remember being nervous on a session in years. We recorded all live, with no click track, so it all went down at the same time and it all had to be perfect from the start. There would be no punching, comping, etc. It was all live... The only overdubs we did was Phil on some extra accordion or ac gtr passes here and there.

L to R; Phil Madeira (producer, ac/gtr, accordion) Me (knob twiddler and storyteller) Emmylou Harris (ac/gtr and vocal), Brian Owings (drums and percussion), Pat Bergeson (elec/gtr), Chris Donohue (bass)

One of my all time favorite records is her "Wrecking Ball" cd that she did with Daniel Lanois (my all-time favorite artist/producer) in the mid-90's. After our sessions at my studio, and when everyone had left the building, I dropped "Wrecking Ball" into my cd player so I could a/b our tracks with the tracks from the cd. I gotta say, with all honesty, my tracks stood strong. Sorry Daniel, but I actually liked my vocal sound on her better than her vocal on the cd...

Heading off to Washington State to cut a record up there for the rest of Jan. We'll be surrounded by snow (and snowmobiles!), along with steelhead fishing in cold, icy rivers, and microbrew beer in warm, fireside taverns. Somehow we have to figure out how to actually get some work done!

But I'll be back at The Workshop soon - come visit and bring some cool music!
